Why is the USA said to be in an economic recovery when unemployment is still high and there are no good jobs?

I have college in the fall, four years to get ready in this country, and there are no signs of recovery (and SDD don't give me any GDP crap unless you explain its significance, u only have a job cuz uyr old) anywho, theres said to be a recovery (just slow) but where, where is America picking up, cause in CT where I live 7500 people bout to get laid off :(
